We are back! This marks the first in-person Maine Bar Fly in two years. It was great to get back to one of our favorite events that we do here at All Points. We saw lots of familiar and new faces and had a great time tying some classic freshwater patterns.

The two flies that we covered for the night were the Black Ghost and Gartside Soft Hackle Streamer. Both very productive here in Maine for trout and landlocked salmon. By tying the marabou version of the Black Ghost, we were able to use similar materials to achieve two very different flies by simply adjusting techniques.

It was pretty clear that the hot beer for the night was Fore River's "Fore Five Six" pale ale. I saw a lot of pints of those at the tables. Speaking to Flynn Wilsea who is an employee at Fore River (and a future Maine Bar Fly instructor!) he said it has been their most popular beer recently.

The Black Ghost was the first pattern that we tied and I took some time at the beginning to go over a little bit of its history. I brought in some images from books which had great old photos of Herb's flies. Deeply rooted in Maine fly fishing, the Black Ghost came from the western mountains on Mooselookmeguntic Lake here in Maine, and including others of Herb Welch's patterns, changed the way featherwing streamers were tied and fished for trout and salmon. His influence was wide spread including with Carrie Stevens and her well known Gray Ghost.

We finished out the night tying the Gartside Soft Hackle Streamer. This is another one of my favorite streamers. It has certainly influenced me with my trout and salmon streamer tying. Most of the patterns that I tie for myself or clients are based around this fly. Jack Gartside had many patterns under his belt including ones for saltwater. Although more of a modern influence, you can see many of his ideas in new patterns today.

Recap: Maine Bar Fly - Fore River Brewing (Dec. 11th 2018)

Recap: Maine Bar Fly - Fore River Brewing (Dec. 11th 2018)

Last night we gathered at Fore River Brewing Company in South Portland for the second Maine Bar Fly of the season. The theme was "Half & Halfs" which was taught be Shaun Baggitt. Two variations were done - a saltwater one for striped bass, bluefish, etc and the other was a freshwater crayfish imitation for trout/bass. This was the first time that we had tied using bucktail. Although probably my favorite material to tie with, it can be tricky not only for beginners, but logistically for large groups. But, everyone prevailed and tied some super fishy patterns!

Continuing the effort with Project Healing Waters, we were able to raffle off some good items including a fully guided day on the water targeting striped bass with Kevin Stone of Old Oak Outfitters - a very generous offering! All proceeds again will go towards PHWFF and specifically their local chapter. This will be true for the remainder of the Maine Bar Flies this season, so at the end of these events I will be able to give back to a wonderful organization.

The great people at Fore River Brewing put up with us again and provided a great place to gather, tell stories, and learn some new tying techniques. They always have great beer including a newer brown ale called All Hands and Timberhitch which is a red ale. I enjoyed both quite a bit!

The next Maine Bar Fly will be taught by Nate Wight and we will be doing Euro style nymphs on jig hooks! Stay tuned for more info. It will take place in January, but date is not confirmed. If you have not signed up for the email list. You can do so HERE. I will be sending out an email with specifics through there.

Hope to see you at the next one!

Recap: Maine Bar Fly at Fore River Brewing (Jan 10th 2018)

Wednesday January 10th was the second installment of the Maine Bar Fly. Held at Fore River Brewing in South Portland, we watched as Shaun Baggitt guided us through three deadly nymph patterns. The Zebra Midge, Brassie, and Higas SOS were the flies of choice. Sharing similar tying techniques and materials, these three patterns are highly effective in New England - especially in the winter (more on that with an upcoming blog post!). We tied these on size 12 Gamakatsu C12 Scud hooks so that the larger hook would be easier for demonstration purposes and also for those newer to tying.

The wood stove was roaring and the beer steadily flowed. The beer selection at Fore River was great with a lot of various stouts, IPAs, and pale ales that worked perfect for a cold winter night. HMH Vises was kind enough to bring a dolly full of their Spartan vises for everyone (that needed one). So, with ample beverages and fly tying materials people dived into the flies of the night...
