With a unique use of the bucktail fibers in the tying, denser heads/ties can be created to achieve various effects. The Bucktail Deceiver (BTD) was first tied by Bob Popvics and utilizes solely bucktail as the source material. With the combination of changing fiber length, location on the hook shank, and density of bucktail sections, an incredibly realistic profile and movement can be created. Here we take you through the steps of tying a Bucktail Deceiver with larger big game in mind such as striped bass, pike, tarpon, musky, and snook.

The Lefty's Deceiver, named after legendary fly fisher Lefty Kreh, has likely caught more big game fish such as striped bass, tarpon, and snook more than any other saltwater fly pattern. With infinite color/variation options, the simple ingredients and tying techniques needed for the Lefty's Deceiver make it a staple for any angler. Hollow fleyes and hollow tying techniques pioneered by the world renowned fly tier Bob Popovics are staples in the modern striped bass fly fishing world. Hollow tying techniques are where bucktail fibers (or other materials) are tied in reverse with the tips facing away from the vice and folded back creating more volume without adding more mass. These techniques are incredibly useful in building large profile baitfish patterns that imitate things such as pogies, herring and mackerel. Hollow fleyes come in all shapes and sizes and hollow tying techniques can be found in countless patterns. These particular hollow fleyes featured are tied using just select bucktail, a few flat wing saddles for the tail, and a next-to-near indestructible UV resin head featuring 1/2" holographic eyes.

By now you have likely seen or heard about the Original Crouser fly that Joe Webster ties here at All Points. As this is a pattern that is most commonly fished along the bottom to imitate crab, shrimp, flounder, etc. here in Maine for striped bass, it quickly was morphed into a (smaller) version for bonefish & permit. Its productivity in tropical flats world was quick and we started to receive messages and photos from customers who had brought some great bonefish & permit to hand with the Crouser. Although the original color of olive/light olive worked well, variations of tan/sand, pink, or rootbeer (for redfish!) seemed to really gain popularity.
