Cuba

Fly Fishing Cuba

Cuba has long been on a lot of flats angler's checklists. It has only been until recently that any sort of real flats fishery has been developed there. Additionally, Cuba has made direct efforts to keep these areas solely for use under Cuban National Marine Parks. Highly regulated and protected, these waters and flats in which we make our fly fishing trip arrangements, are some of the most pristine and healthy in all of the Caribbean. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, snapper, jacks, barracuda - and more - live in abundance.

The vast expanse of flats from Cayo Largo to Isla de la Juventud including channels, cayes, and lagoons that run along the southern (Caribbean) side of the country are also know as the "Canarreos Archipelago." Fished solely from mothership/live-aboard accommodations to keep you constantly right on prime fishing areas, there are a variety of different trips throughout the year. With these trips, you are the only anglers able to fish these waters. Other than potentially those from your group, you will not see another angler during your fishing days.

The Fishing

Fishing the flats of Cuba in Cayo Largo, Isla de la Juvetud, or along the Canarreos, consists of a mixture of hard sand and turtle grass dotted with mangroves. All year, these flats are home to some of the best fishing for bonefish and permit in the Caribbean. With its great diversity, a key feature of this area is the constantly changing dynamics of the water you'll be fishing. In addition to the flats, a lively run of creeks and channels connecting to lagoons and cayes makes for not only healthy ecosystems and passageways for bonefish and permit, but create a bounty of tarpon water. This not only provides unique fishing, but also opportunities at different areas, depending on wind/weather conditions.

The Accommodations

Mothership accommodations are ample and comfortable with the ability to host up to 12 anglers (or 6 skiffs - solo room/boat can be requested). Double occupancy rooms with private bathrooms, living room, dining room + bar, multiple sitting decks, and hot tub help take the edge off after a long day on the water. There is onsite laundry available daily. Breakfast and dinner are served family-style with a mix of American, Cuban, and Italian cuisine, including fresh local seafood. Lunches are packed and taken on the boat. Additionally, open bar arrangements and snacks are provided daily.

It was only in the past couple of years that the ability to fish the best waters of this area, combined into a single trip (winter in the Canarreos), has been available. With the already every-changing geography of this area, we are sure that the live-aboard Canarreos trip will satisfy even the most discerning anglers.
