In Yucatec Mayan, kay means fish. Trust us, Kay Fly Lodge lives up to its name. Situated in Punta Allen, in the middle of Ascension Bay, Mexico, Kay Fly is a small family run operation. Over the years it has gained notoriety as one of the best lodges in all of the Caribbean. It's known for being a no frills lodge simply focusing on highly skilled and professional guides, intimate and comfortable accommodations, a family-like connection to the local community, and a dedication to giving their guests the best "bang-for-their-buck." Longtime lodge manager Lily Bertram, together with her husband and legendary guide and tournament angler José Ucan, have curated one of the most in-demand lodges around.
Ascension Bay is famous for a reason. Over the decades it has solidified itself as one of the premier destinations in all of flats fishing. For many saltwater fly fishing junkies, Ascension Bay is either on their bucket list, or their annual calendar. With healthy populations of bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and jack crevalle, the vastness of Ascension bay and its diversity give anglers almost unlimited options during their trip.
The Fishing
PERMIT - In the heart of the Si'an Kaan Biosphere Reserve, Ascension Bay's healthy fishery is home to incredible numbers of the "big three" - bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Highly regarded as one of the best permit fisheries in all of Caribbean, Ascension Bay has probably put more anglers on permit than anywhere else in the world. Whether it's their 1st or 50th permit, there's a reason flats fishermen choose to visit this area. At Kay Fly, anglers will fish out of well appointed and comfortable pangas with a two-guide system. A senior guide is accompanied by a junior guide which gives their clients skilled guiding and great communication. Most of the fishing is done via their 23ft. pangas, but when the time comes, getting out and stalking fish (particularly permit) on foot is very common.
TARPON - In addition to the world class permit fishing, Ascension Bay is also quickly becoming a sought after destination for tarpon. It has always held quality numbers of resident tarpon, but over the past 7+ years migratory tarpon have become more and more abundant, especially from April - August, and the guides at Kay Fly have this dialed in. Strings of large migratory tarpon are a daily occurrence and anglers staying at Kay Fly will be setup for success. These 70+ pound fish also behave differently here than they do, say, in the Florida Keys. They will smash classic tarpon patterns with reckless abandon. No soft sipping of flies here! Get ready to see some spectacular eats. Because of this, it is advised to bring some weighted tarpon patterns as these fish tend to hit flies so hard sometimes unweighted flies will simply get launched into the air.
BONEFISH - All throughout the bay, especially in the back lagoon, bonefish are plentiful. They can be targeted either out of the panga or while wading. Traditional patterns such as Gotchas, Crazy Charlies, and Christmas Island Specials will get the job done. Bonefish will average 3-4 pounds with larger fish caught on a regular basis. They are the perfect accompaniment for newer and seasonable saltwater anglers alike.
The Accommodations
Kay Fly provides 5 double occupancy bedrooms. These suites all have private bathrooms, air conditioning, ceiling fans, screened windows, porches, and plenty of room for gear and all that you'll bring on your trip. The main lodge, where breakfast and dinners are had, features a comfortable dining room, bar, and an open-air patio. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres after fishing are usually enjoyed out front overlooking the ocean. The rooftop palapa has another bar and has been the place we've had our Cornhole tournaments - a staple while visiting Kay Fly!

General Fishing Package - Hosted Trip Rate:
- 7 nights / 6 Days: $4,600/person (based on double occupancy). Single room and boat are available upon request.
- Includes: Fully guided days, accommodations, meals, guest taxes, and fishing license.
- Not included: Airfare, tips for guides/staff, bar tab, and ground transportation from either Cancun or Tulum. (Note: ground transportation is arranged by Kay Fly, but is paid on site depending on where you are coming from and number of people)
