Video: IG Live Fly Tying Sessions - Hair (Dubbing) Caddis

I have been doing live fly tying sessions on Instagram recently. To help with those who are unable to watch, or want to check them out later, I have set up another camera to make edited versions of these sessions.

Here is the Hair (Dubbing) Caddis I did the other night. It is a variation of the famous Elk Hair Caddis but uses squirrel dubbing in the body.

Recap: Maine Bar Fly - Oxbow Blending & Bottling (Nov 12, 2019)

Recap: Maine Bar Fly - Oxbow Blending & Bottling (Nov 12, 2019)

Last night we started the 3rd season of the Maine Bar Fly. Returning to our roots at Oxbow Blending & Bottling, we tied two nymph patterns under the guidance of Nate Wight of North Woods Fly Company. We learned the Pat's Rubber Leg Stonefly and an original pattern by Nate called the "Henchman." Both of these patterns are very productive in New England trout waters and also share similar materials. This is a great way of showing tyers how various materials can be used for multiple purposes.

One of the best aspects of last night was the amount of younger fly tyers that attended with their parents! Seeing the younger generation getting into fly tying is great to see. Not only were they competent tyers, but they produced some of the best flies within the group.

The two most popular beers of the night were the Farmhouse Pale Ale and Liquid Swords. For those of you that have not tried an Oxbow beer yet, they are one of the most unique and talented breweries around. They are "dedicated to the pursuit of crafting unique farmhouse ales of distinctively European influence."

Thank you very much to HMH Vises, Nate Wight, and Oxbow Beer for making this night happen! These three have been integral in making the Maine Bar Fly a continued event during our tying season (winter).

The next Maine Bar Fly will be at Lone Pine Brewing in Gorham on Dec. 19th. The featured tyer will be local angler Joe Webster who will be teaching two very effective trout & steelhead flies - the White Death and Blood Dot. Hope you can make it!

Leif is back with another great trout streamer! This fly is tied using mostly Craft Fur. Varied slightly, this can also be deadly in the salt for Snook/Baby Tarpon/Redfish in the mangroves.

Leif Catania ties up his "Double Money" which is a zonker based trout streamer with some added Senyo's Laser dub for the head. This streamer gets down, rides hook up, and has a unique technique of gluing the multiple zonker strips together for enhanced profile and movement.

Recap: Maine Bar Fly - Oxbow Blending & Bottling (Nov 12th 2018)

We are back! The Maine Bar Fly has returned and it is shaping up to be a great season of fly tying. I thought it would be proper to arrange the first one (of this season) to be held at Oxbow and to also have Aaron Lockwood tying the fly. That was the setup on the very first bar fly...so if it ain't broke...

Last night was a special one as I coordinated with local Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing members/chapters. Seeing as it was Veteran's Day, it made it even better. We were lucky enough to have a good amount of PHWFF members there tying with us as well. Those who attended got to hear a little bit about what Project Healing Waters does and how it can help those who have served our country. Further, we were able to raise a little bit of money via donations and ticket sales.

You can read up on Project Healing Waters HERE

Last night we tied Lockwood's "Sneaky Smelt" which is a trout streamer tied with marabou and synthetic Senyo's Laser Dub. It's a killer pattern!

The next Maine Bar Fly is scheduled for December 11th at Fore River Brewing. We will be tying "Half & Half" patterns with Shaun Baggitt in both freshwater and saltwater variations. Hope you can join us!

I would like to give out a big "thank you" to Tim Adams from Oxbow who has been a big supporter of All Points and the Maine Bar Fly since day one, Aaron Lockwood for not only bringing his expertise to the tying table but for all his help along the way, and also Jon Larrabee from HMH Vises (these nights would not be possible without him).
